Dexter Hobbs, Marcie Hobbs’ father, is the son of Truman McGill Hobbs and Joyce Cummings Hobbs.
Born October 22, 1927, Joyce died December 18, 2020 in Montgomery, AL. Joyce’s parents were Emilie Hoyt Cummings and Dexter Cummings. Dexter’s mother graduated from Ethel Walker Boarding School and Vassar College. His parents were married for 66 years.
Meanwhile, Dexter’s father, Truman, who was born on February 2, 1921, died on November 4, 2015. He was 94 years old when he passed away. Truman was born and raised in Selma and Washington, DC, and graduated from the University of North Carolina, where he was student body president and a member of Phi Beta Kappa fraternity and Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity.
Truman earned his law degree from Yale Law School and clerked for Supreme Court Justice Hugo Black. He was appointed to the federal bench by President Jimmy Carter in 1980 and eventually served as chief judge of the Middle District of Alabama.
Truman was the son of former judge and congressman Sam Hobbs and Sarah Ellen Hobbs.
Dexter has two sisters; Frances Hobbs Rose and Emilie Hobbs Reid, and one brother; Judge Truman McGill Hobbs Jr.

Nan Dunklin Hobbs, Marcie Hobbs’ mother, was born to Nancy Rhea Dunklin and Dr. James Hilliard Dunklin III. Nan’s mother Nancy was born in Dubuque, Iowa, on April 19, 1929, and passed away on May 17, 2020. Her parents were Mr. and Mrs. Chleo James Jared Rhea.
Nancy also has two older sisters, Joanne Rhea Glass and Marilyn Rhea Redwood.
Nancy graduated from the University of Alabama and was President of Delta DeltaDelta sorority. Nancy was a loyal Crimson Tide fan and an avid tennis player. In addition to Nan, Nancy has two other children; Lynn Dunklin Nielsen (Tom) of Evergreen, and James Hilliard Dunklin IV (Tyler) of Greenville.
Nan’s father had been practicing family medicine since 1956. He was a physician and community leader in Butler County for 34 years, passing away at the age of 66 while attending a medical meeting. He graduated from the University of Alabama in 1950 and Tulane University School of Medicine in 1954.
December 1956 marked Nan Hobbs’s birthday. In early winter 2021, Nan Hobbs turned 65.
Nan Hobbs’s occupation is unclear, but it appears she has dedicated her life to community service.
