He is of Irish descent. He began his career in music before majoring in communications at SUNY New Paltz and working for Cablevision in various positions, including sales, before being sent by his father to Cleveland to oversee the launch of eye a sports radio station.

While supporters say Voom will push Cablevision into the growing satellite industry of the future and expand its user base, critics like him say the proposal is too expensive and no cost-cutting measures will be implemented anytime soon. As a result, Voom was closed. This achievement was an important milestone in James L. Dolan becoming a capable businessman.
Cablevision’s philanthropic partnership with the Lustgarten Foundation, a private funder of pancreatic cancer research, was nurtured by James L. Dolan. With Charles Dolan and Marc Lustgarten, former Vice President of Cablevision and President of Madison Square Garden.
In 1998, James L. Dolan founded the Foundation. Cablevision announced a multi-year commitment to cover the Foundation’s expenses in 2008, guaranteeing that 100% of all donations will go toward research.
