Early life and education
James May, 60, was born in Bristol, England, on January 16, 1963. He is the second of four children of James May, a sales manager, and Catherine May, a nurse. His siblings include Jane May, Sarah May and David May.
He grew up in South Wales before moving to Rotherham, Yorkshire, where he attended Oakwood Comprehensive School. He developed an interest in cars, music and engineering at an early age.
