Early life
Jeanie Marie Buss was born on September 26, 1961, to Joann and Jerry Buss. She has three siblings. She was raised by her older brothers Johnny and Jim, as well as her younger sister Janie.
After her parents divorced in 1972, Buss felt emotionally abandoned. Buss attended World Tennis Team meetings with her father, who owned Los Angeles Strings, when she was 14.
She learned so much about Pickfair that she began organizing tours. World TeamTennis ceased operations in 1978, only to re-emerge in 1981 as TeamTennis.
In the second iteration, Jerry regained control of Strings. At the age of 19, she joined the family business as general manager. Buss studied business and graduated with honors from the University of Southern California (USC).

Professional career
After the Strings dissolved in 1993, Buss founded the Los Angeles Blades at Roller Hockey International, which brought professional hockey to Los Angeles. The league recognized her as Executive of the Year.
For four years, Buss was president of the Great Western Forum, the Lakers’ former home. During her time at the Forum, her involvement with the Lakers grew.
She has served on the NBA Board of Governors as an Alternate Governor since 1995. In 1999, she was promoted to senior vice president of business operations for the Los Angeles Lakers.
Jim was appointed vice president of player personnel in 2005. Under their father’s plan, Buss would take control of business decisions while Jim would take control of basketball operations.
In 2005, Sporting News named Buss one of the top 20 women in sports. In 2011, Forbes called Buss “one of the most powerful women in sports management,” while ESPN called her “one of the most powerful women in the NBA.”
After her father died in 2013, his six children were given equal voting rights over his 66 percent controlling ownership of the Lakers through a trust. He fired Mitch Kupchak as general manager.
He then accepted her brother Jim’s resignation as Vice President of Basketball Operations in 2017 and appointed Magic Johnson as President of Basketball Operations. Buss is the owner of WOW-Women Of Wrestling.
In 2021, at Circa Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, ViacomCBS President of Global Distribution Dan Cohen and Buss’ longtime business partner David McLane made the announcement.
ViacomCBS has signed a multi-year advertising distribution agreement for WOW, making WOW the most comprehensive media distribution platform in women’s wrestling history.
