Jimmy Connors was born on September 2, 1952 in Belleville, Illinois. His father, James Connors, was a butcher and his mother, Gloria, was a homemaker. Connors had two older brothers, John and Chris.
Connors began playing tennis at age 3, and by age 10 he had won several junior tournaments. He attended St. Therese’s High School in Decatur, Illinois, where he excelled in tennis and basketball.
In 1972, at the age of 19, Connors turned professional. He rose quickly and won his first Grand Slam title at the Australian Open in 1974.
