Early life
Joseph Michael Kramer was born on June 21, 1950, in the Bronx, New York City, to Doris and Mickey Kramer, a businesswoman. At the age of 14, he began playing drums with The Medallions, an 11-piece rhythm and blues band.
Kramer briefly attended Thornton Donovan School and was a student at Berklee College of Music, playing with Chubby & the Turnpikes, later known as the Tavares, along with Bernie Worrell.
Career
Kramer met his friend, Steven Tyler, who had formed a band with Joe Perry and Tom Hamilton and was looking for a drummer, he joined and named the band Aerosmith, then Brad Whitford joined the band in 1971.
They got their big break in 1972, at Max’s Kansas City Club in New York. Clive Davis was there that night and immediately signed a contract with Columbia Records. The band toured in 1973 after releasing their self-titled debut album.
“Get Your Wings”, their next album, went gold. “Toys in the Attic” was released in 1975, following “Rocks” in 1976. During this period, the band underwent significant artistic and commercial change, with success.
The album included “Last Child,” “Sweet Emotion,” “Back in the Saddle,” and “Walk This Way.” Their tireless touring paid off with platinum records and sold-out crowds.
This culminated in 1978 in front of a massive crowd of over 80,000 at the iconic Texxas Jam and a sea of over 350,000 at the epic CAL Jam. In 1979, Joe Perry left Aerosmith to form The Joe Perry Project.
Brad Whitford left Aerosmith to form Whitford-St. Holmes. The band’s charm wore off in 1982 with the album “Rock In a Hard Place.” Saner minds prevailed, and Perry and Whitford returned to the band for the Back in the Saddle tour in 1984.
