Personal life

On July 18, 1951, 17-year-old Johnny Cash met his first wife, Vivian Cash, at an ice skating rink while attending Air Force basic training in San Antonio, Texas.

Cash dated Vivian Liberto for three weeks before he was sent to West Germany for a three-year military tour. During this time, the couple exchanged hundreds of love letters. On August 7, 1954, a month after Cash was discharged from the military, he and Vivian Liberto were married at St. Ann’s Roman Catholic Church in San Antonio.

Johnny Cash and Vivian Liberto had four daughters, Rosanne Cash, Kathy Cash, Cindy Cash, and Tara Cash. In 1961, his family moved to a hilltop home in Casita Springs, California. In 1966, he and Vivian Cash divorced after Vivian Liberto accused her of having an extramarital affair and a drug addiction.

While on tour, Johnny Cash met June Carter Cash and they fell in love at first sight. He proposed to her at a live concert in London, Ontario, thirteen years after they had met backstage at the Grand Ole Opry.

The two were married on March 1, 1968, in Franklin, Kentucky. Their only child, John Carter Cash, was born on March 3, 1970.

He also dated Billie Jean Jones (1950-1951).

Afterwards, he mustered up the courage to go to the Sun Records studio in hopes of signing a record contract.

Johnny Cash sang a number of gospel songs when he auditioned for Sam Phillips, but the producer told him he was no longer going to record gospel music. In a 2002 interview, he denied that Sam Phillips had urged him to “go home and commit sin and then come back with a song that would sell.”

On December 4, 1956, Elvis Presley visited Sam Phillips while Carl Perkins was in the studio writing new songs and Jerry Lee Lewis was accompanying him on the piano. Johnny Cash also came to the studio and the four of them began an impromptu jam session.

Sam Phillips kept the tapes going, and about half of the gospel songs on the recordings survived. They have since been re-released under the name Million Dollar Quartet.
