Early life
Hillary Diane Rodham Clinton was born the first child of Hugh Rodham (father) and Dorothy Howell Rodham (mother). She was born on October 26, 1947 at Edgewater Medical Center, Chicago. She is from the state of Illinois, United States.
She has two younger brothers named Tony Rodham and Hugh Rodham. She was raised in a United Baptist family and has English, Dutch, Welsh, and French Canadian ancestry.
Growing up, Hillary Clinton lived in Park Ridge, a suburb of Chicago. Her father, Hugh Rodham, founded and managed a small business, while her mother, Dorothy Howell Rodham, was a homemaker. She was a Girl Scout during her childhood and teenage years and participated in swimming and softball.
During her high school days, Hillary Clinton participated in Student Council and was elected to the National Honor Society. She served as class vice president during her junior year and was a National Merit finalist. She was elected President of the Wellesley College Government Association during her junior year.

Career
After graduating from law school, Hillary Clinton served as a congressional legal counsel for several years. She co-founded Arkansas Advocates for Children and Families in 1977. The following year, she was appointed the first female president of the Legal Services Corporation.
She became the first female partner of the Rose Law Firm in Little Rock in 1979. She has also twice appeared on the National Law Journal’s list of the 100 most influential lawyers in the United States.
While her husband, Bill Clinton, was Governor of Arkansas, Hillary Clinton served as First Lady of the state from 1979 to 1981 and again from 1983 to 1992. She became First Lady of the United States in 1993 after her husband was elected President.
Hillary Clinton served as First Lady from 1993 to 2001 and supported national health care reform. She was a leader in the movement to create the State Children’s Health Insurance Program. She also supported the Safe Families and Adoption Act and the Foster Care Independence Act. However, her main initiative, the Clinton Health Care Plan, failed to pass Congress in 1994.
At the end of her tenure as First Lady, Hillary Clinton decided to try her hand at elected office in American politics. She was elected to the United States Senate from New York, becoming the state’s first female senator and the first First Lady to hold the office at the same time. She served in the Senate from 2001 to 2009 and was chair of the Senate Democratic Steering and Outreach Committee.
In 2008, Hillary Clinton ran for president but lost the Democratic presidential nomination to Barack Obama, who went on to win the US presidential election. After Barack Obama took office, she was appointed as the United States Secretary of State. She served in this position from 2009 to 2013.
Hillary Clinton ran for president for a second time in 2016 and won the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination. Although she won the popular vote, she lost the electoral college to Republican candidate Donald Trump.

Hillary Clinton began dating Bill Clinton in the spring of 1971. They were both law students at the time. She married Bill on October 11, 1975, in a Methodist ceremony held in their living room.
