While at Oregon State University, Johnny Hekker was a member of the Beavers football team. He won the 2008 Sun Bowl Special Teams Player of the Year award after gaining a total of 45 yards on ten kickoffs, including 57 and 52 yards in the fourth quarter of the Beavers’ 3–0 victory over the Pitt Panthers.
He was a four-year starter and one of Oregon State’s most productive kickers late in his college career. In 2011, against the Utah Utes, he set a school record for a single-game passing average of 52.5 (six kicks for 315 yards).
With a 41.3 yard per kick average, Johnny Hekker ranks third in school history in career kicking yards. In 2011, he was named to the Ray Guy Award Watch List and was named Kicker of the Week by the College Football Performance Awards.
The Ray Guy Award is given annually to the nation’s top kicker. He was a Ray Guy and Phil Steele All-Pac-10 Second Team nominee as a semifinalist in 2009. John Hekker had 52 career kicks of 50+ yards as a senior, including 17 kicks of at least 60 yards in six different games.
With 87 punts inside 20 yards, he earned the Pac-12 Conference Honorable Mention Award in 2011.
In all but one game, he also had at least one 50-yard kick in 2010.
As a Beaver, Hekker had a few notable kicks. One of them was the school’s second-longest kick. In 2010, against USC, the kick went 74 yards. Another time, he missed the ball and lost 4 yards on a negative-yardage kick.
Johnny Hekker also served as penalty taker for three years.

He was signed by the St. Louis Rams as an undrafted free agent in 2012. He officially broke Andy Lee’s single-season record (44) for net penalty yards (44.2) set in 2006 for the San Francisco 49ers on December 29, 2013.
He signed a six-year, $18 million contract on December 5, 2014, with $9 million guaranteed. His contract was the largest ever offered to a player.
Johnny Hekker continued to lead the league in net batting average in 2015 and the Associated Press selected him as an all-conference player for the second time.
He signed a two-year contract extension with the Rams through the 2022 season on September 11, 2017.
