Nora Mayer-Foster was born into a wealthy publishing family in Munich, Germany. Her father, Franz Karl Mayer, was a prosecutor who brought Nazis to justice during the war. After the war, he became the editor and publisher of the Daily Mirror.
Nora grew up in Munich and developed a keen interest in music at an early age. She was educated in Munich and worked in her father’s media company.
As the daughter of the editor and publisher of Der Tagesspiegel weekly, she inherited the bulk of her father’s fortune upon his death, estimated at around A$120 million.

They had a daughter named Ariane, who later became known as Ari Up, the lead singer and vocalist for the punk band The Slits.After her first marriage ended, Nora met John Lydon, aka Johnny Rotten, of the Sex Pistols.
They married in Düsseldorf, Germany in 1979. Despite the 14-year age difference between them, Nora and John were married for 44 years until Nora’s death in 2023. In the 1980s, they moved to California.
