Prominent Nigerian politician and banker Kashim Shettima Mustapha was born on 2 September 1966. As of 2019, he represents Borno Central in the Senate. From 2011 to 2019, he served as the governor of Borno State.

He is a member of the All Progressives Congress and will contest as Bola Tinubu’s vice presidential candidate in the 2023 presidential election. Kashim Shettima is a graduate of the University of Maiduguri and the University of Ibadan.

After completing his studies, he joined the banking industry and eventually held several senior executive positions in banks. He took over the Maiduguri office of Zenith Bank in the mid-2000s, but left that job in 2007 to join Governor Ali Modu Sheriff’s state cabinet.

After serving in the cabinet for four years, Kashim Shettima was elected governor in 2011 and re-elected with a larger margin of votes in 2015. The deadly Boko Haram insurgency dominated his tenure. He later won the Senate election. He was re-nominated for the Senate in 2023; however, he declined to run in favor of Bola Tinubu. He was succeeded as Senate candidate by Kaka Shehu Lawan.

Early life and education

Alhaji Kashim Shettima was born on 2 September 1966 in Shettimari, Maiduguri, Borno State, to the family of Alhaji Shettima Mustafa Kuttayibe.

He completed his secondary education in 1983 at Government Science Secondary School, Potiskum (now in neighbouring Yobe State), after attending Lamisula Primary School in Maiduguri from 1972 to 1978. From 1978-1980, he continued his education at Government Community Secondary School.

In 1989, Kashim Shettima graduated from the University of Maiduguri with a Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Economics. In addition, in 1991, he obtained a master’s degree from the University of Ibadan in Southwestern Nigeria.

From 1991 to 1993, Kashim Shettima worked as a lecturer in the department of agricultural economics at the University of Maiduguri.

Career

Kashim Shettima joined the banking industry in 1993, working as the head of the accounts unit for the now defunct Commercial Bank of Africa in Ikeja, Lagos State, South West Nigeria. He worked there from 1993 to 1997. He joined African International Bank Limited in 1997 as a Deputy Manager and was promoted to Manager in 2001. He moved to Zenith Bank in 2001 and is currently the Head of the Maiduguri Branch.

He rose through the ranks of the bank to become Senior Manager/Branch Head, Assistant General Manager (AGM)/Regional Head (North East) and Deputy General Manager/Regional Head before stepping down as General Manager in 2007 after being appointed as Commissioner of Finance in Borno State (North East).

Kashim Shettima was an agricultural economist at the Ikeja office of the Commercial Bank of Africa in Lagos State (1993–1997). He later worked as a branch manager and deputy manager at the Kaduna branch of the International Bank of Africa Limited (1997–2001). In 2001, he was appointed branch manager and deputy manager of the Maiduguri office of Zenith Bank.

Five years later, Kashim Shettima was felicitated as the director general. In mid-2007, he was appointed as the Borno Commissioner for Finance and Economic Development as an achievement in his political career.

He was later appointed as Commissioner of the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Education, Agriculture and later Health under his predecessor, the Governor of Borno, Ali Modu Sheriff. From 2007 to 2011, Kashim Shettima served as Commissioner of 5 Ministries.

The attackers then assassinated Modu Fannami Gubio, and Kashim Shettima won the second primary in February 2011. On 26 April 2011, he defeated Mohammed Goni of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) by 531,147 votes, while Goni won 450,140 votes. He received several leadership awards in 2014 and 2015 from the National Union of Nigerian Journalists, a national organization, then in 2016, he won an award from Tell magazine.

Kashim Shettima also received the Zik Award for Leadership, the Kaduna NUJ Award for Exceptional Courage and Leadership (2017) and the FCT NUJ Award for Exceptional Leadership (2017). After winning the Borno Central Senatorial District election in February 2019, he replaced Senator Kaka Bashir Garbai.

Kashim Shettima is a married man and is married to Nana Shettima, and they have three children: Armir Shettima, Fatima Shettima and Amira Shettima.
