Early Life & Education

Alhaji Kashim Shettima was born on September 2, 1966 in Shettimari, Maiduguri, Borno State, in the family of Alhaji Shettima Mustafa Kuttayibe.

He completed his secondary education in 1983 at the Government Science Secondary School, Potiskum (now in neighboring Yobe State), after studying at Lamisula Primary School in Maiduguri from 1972 to 1978. From In 1978-1980, he continued to study at Government Community High School.

In 1989, Kashim Shettima graduated from the University of Maiduguri with a Bachelor of Agricultural Economics. Furthermore, in 1991, he earned a master’s degree from the University of Ibadan in Southwestern Nigeria.

From 1991 to 1993, Kashim Shettima worked as a lecturer in the department of agricultural economics at the University of Maiduguri.

Career

Kashim Shettima joined the banking industry in 1993, working as head of accounts at the now defunct Commercial Bank of Africa Limited in Ikeja, Lagos State, Southwestern Nigeria. He served there from 1993 to 1997. He joined Africa International Bank Limited in 1997 as Deputy Director and rose to the position of Director in 2001. He moved to Zenith Bank in 2001 and is currently the main branch manager of Maiduguri.

He rose through the bank’s ranks to become Senior Manager/Branch Head, Assistant General Manager (AGM)/Regional Head (Northeast) and Deputy General Manager/Regional Head before leaving position of General Director in 2007 after being appointed Commissioner of Finance. in Borno state (Northeast).

Kashim Shettima was an agricultural economist at the Ikeja office of the Commercial Bank of Africa in Lagos State (1993-1997). He then worked as a branch manager and deputy manager at the Kaduna branch of Africa International Bank (1997–2001). In 2001, he was appointed branch manager and deputy manager of the Maiduguri office of Zenith Bank.

Five years later, Kashim Shettima was congratulated on becoming general manager. In mid-2007, he was appointed Commissioner of the Borno State Ministry of Finance and Economic Development as an achievement in his political career.

He was later appointed Commissioner in the Ministries of Local Government and Chieftaincy, Education, Agriculture and later Health under his predecessor as Borno governor, Chief Ali Modu. From 2007 to 2011, Kashim Shettima served as Commissioner of 5 Ministries.
