Name
The name Kep1er was suggested by viewers of the show “Girl Planet 999” through the Naver website. The name was coined by Johannes Kepler, a German astronomer and mathematician from the 16th to 17th centuries who named many laws, including the laws of planetary motion, after himself.
history
Kep1er was officially launched on October 22, 2021 in the Mnet reality survival show Girls Planet 999. The show aired from August 6 to October 22, 2021. The show attracted 99 contestants from China, Japan, and South Korea to participate in the multinational girl group competition. The rules of the competition were clear, and only the top 9 of the 99 contestants could enter the finals.
Before the show aired, some of the group members were already active in the entertainment industry. One of the members, Choi Yoo Jin, made her debut on March 19, 2015 as a member of Cube Entertainment’s girl group CLC.
She also participated in the group’s extended play album First Love. She temporarily left CLC due to activities with Kep1er. In 2010, Kang Ye-seo was a member of the girl group CutieL before joining Busters from 2019 to 2020. Another band member, Kim Da-yeon, participated in Produce 48 in 2018, representing CNC Entertainment, while Sim Hsiao-ting participated in Produce Camp 2020, representing Top Class Entertainment.
Both were eliminated in the first round of the competition, having ranked 70th and 80th in their respective shows. Sakamoto Mashir was a trainee at JYP Entertainment from 2016 to 2018, and appeared on the first episode of Mnet’s reality survival show Stray Kids as part of a team of female trainees, but did not make it past the first episode. After the Produce 48 competition, Kim Da-yeon left CNC Entertainment and signed with Stadium Entertainment. She left the record label after her debut plans fell through.
Shen Xiaoting is a competitive standard and modern dancer, having won a gold medal at a modern dance sports competition in Shanghai and ranked sixth in the world at a competition in the UK.
The group, Kep1er, was originally scheduled to begin activities on December 14, 2021, with pre-orders for its First Impact EP beginning on November 29. They were also initially scheduled to perform at the 2021 Mnet Asian Music Awards on December 11. However, due to a staff member of the group testing positive for COVID-19, the group’s first performance was postponed to January 3, 2022.
Their group’s performance at the 2021 Mnet Asian Music Awards was canceled. On December 14, it was revealed that group members Mashiro and Xiaoting tested positive for COVID-19 and announced that they would fully recover on December 26, 2022.
