Early life and education
La Toya Jackson was born on May 29, 1956, at St. Mary’s Mercy Hospital in Gary, Indiana. She is the fifth of ten children of Joe Jackson and Katherine Jackson and the middle daughter between Rebbie Jackson and Janet Jackson.
La Toya Jackson was a shy child growing up. She joined the Jehovah’s Witnesses along with the rest of her siblings: Janet Jackson, Randy Jackson, Rebbie Jackson, Michael Jackson, Tito Jackson, Jermaine Jackson, Jackie Jackson, Joh Vonnie Jackson, Marlon Jackson, and Brandon David Jackson when her mother did so in 1965.
She spent some of her time preaching door-to-door with her mother. “Every morning, Michael Jackson and I would go around Los Angeles knocking on doors, spreading the word of Jehovah.” When her father arranged for her brothers to perform in concert in Las Vegas, among other cities, in 1972, La Toya Jackson joined them in the spotlight with a tap dance move.
La Toya Jackson graduated from Cal-Prep in Encino, Los Angeles, in 1974. She aspired to practice commercial law as an attorney. She attended college briefly before her father insisted that she follow in the footsteps of the rest of her family and pursue a career in show business.
Personal life
La Toya Jackson’s father hired Jack Gordon to co-manage her in 1987. Jack Gordon eventually took over her management duties. Her public image became increasingly more sexual under Jack Gordon’s direction.
In her autobiography, My Family, the Jacksons, Katherine Jackson described her horror when she first witnessed La Toya Jackson dancing in 1988. Katherine Jackson suspected that Jack Gordon was separating La Toya Jackson from her family so that he “could become the dominant force in her life”.
La Toya Jackson and Jack Gordon were married on September 5, 1989, after her explosive concert in Nevada. There was speculation that she was forced to marry Jack Gordon. La Toya Jackson later confirmed that she was forced into the marriage, with Jack Gordon saying it was for her safety from her family’s imprisonment.
I’ve never been in love, and I’ve never even gone on a date… This doesn’t seem right. I don’t care about you. I don’t have feelings for you.’ The marriage “was in name only,” she told Ebony magazine, something she told Jack Gordon before they got married.
When La Toya Jackson was in Rome, Italy, six months after their marriage, he asked Jack Gordon to annul the engagement. Jack Gordon retaliated by repeatedly smashing her skull against the corner of a hotel room table, threatening to never let her go. Later, paparazzi photographed La Toya Jackson with black eyes, which Jack Gordon said were the result of an intruder.
When she learned that Jack Gordon was planning to use her in a porn video, she decided that enough was enough. While Jack Gordon was away, La Toya Jackson called her brother Randy Jackson, who rushed to New York to help her escape.
Days later, La Toya Jackson filed for divorce in Las Vegas, and Jack Gordon was sued in civil court for years of abuse under the Violence Against Women Act.
She was engaged to Jeffre Phillips (2013). She has no children.
Career
On March 9, 2003, La Toya Jackson made a spectacular return on Larry King Live. Her appearance kept CNN’s phone lines busy for hours and it was Larry King’s most watched broadcast in three years.
Startin’ Over was La Toya Jackson’s first musical project after her divorce. The title track from Startin’ Over, titled Just Wanna Dance, was released independently in 2004 under the stage name Toy to counter any prejudice DJs might have against La Toya Jackson’s name.
The strategy paid off, with Just Wanna Dance peaking at number 13 on the Billboard Hot Dance chart in the United States. Free the World was released later that year. Due to unforeseen circumstances, the album was delayed several times. However, La Toya Jackson’s record label, Ja-Tail Records, signed a deal with Universal Music Group and the album was eventually released.
