Lalela Mswane was born on 27 March 1997 in Richard Bay, South Africa. She is the youngest of three children. She was born into the Shoyebi family.

Lalela Mswane started her modelling career after participating in the Matric Experience 2015 beauty pageant and winning first runner-up.
On 6 July 2021, she was shortlisted as one of the 30 finalists for the Face of South Africa. After a series of interviews and public voting, she was announced as one of the ten finalists on 3 August. The 2021 Face of South Africa finals were held on 16 October at Cape Town’s Grand Western Arena.
After a fierce battle between the contestants, Lalela Mswane made it to the top 5.
After all the contestants had to participate in the Q&A round, Lalela Mswane was selected as one of the three finalists. After the final round, Lalela Mswane was finally crowned Miss South Africa 2021.
The following month after becoming the face of South Africa, she was selected to represent the country at the Miss Universe pageant in December; but things changed after the South African government withdrew its support for the pageant as it was to be held in Israel.
