early life
Born on August 17, 2003, LAROI has risen to fame despite a difficult childhood. He was born in Waterloo, New South Wales, and grew up with his brother Austin Howard. His father, Nick Howard, is a respected music producer and sound engineer who has worked with several successful Australian musicians, including Brigitte Bardot and Delta Goodrem. His mother, Sloane Howard, is a great figure in the industry, having founded her own record label and managed many successful artists, such as Popstars champion Scott Cain.
Laroi’s upbringing was far from idyllic, however. His maternal great-great grandfather was part of the Stolen Generation, a group of Aboriginal Australians who were forcibly taken away from their families as children. He is a Gamilaraay (or Kamilaroi) descendant of this ancestor, from whom he gets his stage name, Laroi.
As a child, Laroy’s father was not always present in his life, and his uncle became a father figure to him. Tragically, his uncle was murdered in 2015, which had a profound impact on the young artist. He says his drive to succeed comes from a desire to avoid suffering his uncle’s fate and to make him proud.
When he was four, his parents divorced, which brought further turmoil. Laroy has spoken publicly about his family’s difficulties, including his mother occasionally dealing drugs to make ends meet. When he was seven, his family moved to the rural town of Broken Hill in New South Wales, where he attended Sacred Heart Parish School and won oratory competitions.
After leaving Broken Hill, Laroy moved to Adelaide, where he attended Sacred Heart College for a time. However, he was bullied and his mother could no longer afford his school fees, so they returned to Sydney in 2017. He won a scholarship to the Australian Grammar School for the Performing Arts, but dropped out midway through Year 9 to pursue his international career.
During this time, the family lived in a Housing Commission block in Redfern, with Laroy moving around and staying with friends. In a 2021 interview, he revealed that his mother was his best friend and he wanted to help her financially, so he took a part-time job in a fruit shop. Despite his challenging childhood, Laroy’s talent and dedication made him an international superstar, inspiring fans around the world.
