Laverne Cox was born on May 29, 1972 in Mobile, Alabama. Gloria Cox is her mother’s name, while her father’s name is unknown. She was born male but has always identified as female. M. Lamar, who played the pre-transition Sophia on Orange Is the New Black, is her identical twin brother.
Laverne Cox graduated from Marymount College in Manhattan, New York City with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance. She also studied dance at Indiana University Bloomington and the Alabama Academy of the Arts.
