Career
Lawrence Dallaglio became Wasps club captain in 1995 after a number of experienced players left the club. He helped keep the team together and led them to their first English league title in the professional era a year later.
Dallaglio regained the club captaincy in the 1999–2000 season. While Wasps’ league form was disappointing, he led them to the quarter-finals of the Heineken Cup and won the Tetley’s Bitter Cup for the second time in a row.
Dallaglio returned from an ankle injury in 2006–07 to regain the captaincy, but Wasps had an unimpressive season and failed to qualify for the playoffs. The following season, Dallaglio joined Wasps late due to the Rugby World Cup, but Wasps’ fortunes improved as the season progressed.
In the 2007–08 season, Wasps reached the Premiership final, Dallaglio’s last in charge, winning 26–16 on aggregate against Leicester Tigers in front of a packed Twickenham crowd.
Dallaglio later claimed it was Wasps’ greatest Premiership title, given the impact the Rugby World Cup had on their squad. Dallaglio made a brief appearance for Wasps ‘A’ in 2008 before captaining an England XV in a charity match in September that year, shortly before his retirement.
