Aminah Nieves plays “Teonna Rainwater” in 1923. Her character is clearly from the 1920s and attends a boarding school for Native American girls. But the school is more than just a religious concentration camp. Run by white Catholics since the turn of the century, the authorities severely punish any behavior that is out of line.

Teonna is, of course, mercilessly beaten by a nun (Sister Mary O’Connor), who is also abused by her superior, Father Renaud. Later, Renaud (who initially seems to side with Teonna) joins in and beats Teonna so badly that her leg is scarred.

The scenes were pretty intense! In fact, Aminah herself was scared at times, even though she was just acting. So being able to immerse herself in that, and also honoring her ancestors “who have gone through a lot of adversity and continue to go through adversity,” the actress felt was important.
