Meet Bryan Christopher Kohberger, Idaho Murder Suspect
Bryan Christopher Kohberger is believed to be the murder suspect in connection with the November 2022 stabbing deaths of four University of Idaho students. Bryan was reportedly caring for a nearby student and lived just a few miles from where the victims were found.
Bryan was arrested in Monroe County, Pennsylvania, on an active arrest warrant for first-degree murder issued by the Moscow, Idaho Police Department and the Latah County Prosecutor’s Office, according to a criminal complaint, CNN reported.
After the suspect was revealed, people who knew Bryan also discussed him on Reddit. In a post that was deleted from Reddit after the arrest became public, a DeSales University research student named Bryan Kohberger sought to participate in a research project “to understand how emotions and psychological traits influence decision-making when committing crimes.”
“Specifically, this study seeks to understand the story behind your most recent offense, focusing on your thoughts and feelings during that experience,” the now-deleted Reddit post said.
Earlier this month, authorities asked the public for information about a 2011–2013 white Hyundai Elantra that they said was “near” the crime scene at the time of the murder. Police previously said they had received numerous tips following that call. After tracking down the Elantra’s owner as Bryan, investigators eventually zeroed in on him, according to two law enforcement sources briefed on the investigation.
Sources added that police believe Kohberger fled the area and went to Pennsylvania after the crime and his DNA matched that found at the crime scene.
The suspect had been followed by an FBI surveillance team in the area near where he was arrested for several days, sources said. Kohberger traveled across the country in the Elantra and landed at his parents’ home in Pennsylvania just before Christmas, according to a law enforcement source.
Bryan’s former classmate Nick Mcloughlin told the Daily Beast that he was “stunned” to see his old friend incarcerated. When Kohberger graduated his junior year, Mcloughlin noted that he “got real.” But Kohberger returned “skinnier than a rail” by the start of his senior year, became “aggressive,” and took up boxing.
Recalling how their friendship turned sour, Nick Mcloughlin added: ‘He always wanted to fight someone, he bullied people. We started cutting him out of our group of friends because he was a completely different person.’
While prosecutors and detectives from the Moscow police department, Idaho State Police and the FBI tried to establish enough probable cause to issue an arrest warrant, authorities continued to monitor Kohberger. Authorities tracked Kohberger across the country and also kept an eye on his parents’ home, according to law enforcement sources.
“This is not the end of this investigation, in fact, this is a new beginning,” Latah County Prosecutor Bill Thompson said Friday. “Now that you all know the name of the person who has been charged with these crimes, please make that information public, please ask the public, anyone who knows about this individual, to come forward.”
“Please report anything you know about him to help investigators, and ultimately our office and the court system, fully understand everything there is to know not only about that individual but also about what happened and why,” Thompson added.

Murder glorified by the state is still murder.”
In another letter, published in June 2022, Maryann, who works as a teacher’s aide, teaching students under the supervision of certified teachers, reflected on the shooting in Uvalde, Texas. “As I sit here this morning, reeling from yet another school shooting, I find myself wrestling with what actions need to be taken to stop all this madness,” she wrote. “What is the answer? Gun control measures? Mental health interventions?”

Despite the horrific atrocities he allegedly committed, both Melissa and his mother, Maryann, have spoken out against violence. After the Uvalde, Texas mass shooting in May, Maryann sent a letter to a local newspaper, including a poem Melissa had written about the tragedy.
A relative told New York Post Kohberger was ‘OCD’ about his eating habits and forced his family to buy new pots that had never been used to cook meat. “It was more than just being a vegetarian. Lawrence Rosenberg, another college friend, said he took classes at the Career & Technical Institute with Kohberger, but dropped out in 2014 without finishing.
“He always had this dull look on his face like he was on drugs and no one in class really talked to him, which is why he only studied for two years and then dropped out without taking the final exams,” he said.
