Damacio Diaz Talks Hulu’s Killing County

Hulu is premiering a true crime show called Killing County, which tells the story of corruption within the California Police Department and how it affects families. While the show’s main subject is Jorge Ramirez, Jr., viewers also get to meet former police detective Damacio Diaz.

Damacio, formerly a detective with the Bakersfield Police Department, was sentenced today to five years in prison for bribery, possession and attempted possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine. He also prepared and signed false income tax returns, Acting U.S. Attorney Phillip A. Talbert announced.

On December 5, 2016, U.S. District Court Judge Lawrence J. O’Neill ordered Damacio to complete his sentence. On May 31, 2016, Damacio pleaded guilty to the charges. Diaz’s former partner, Patrick Mara, 36, of Bakersfield, pleaded guilty to similar charges on June 20, 2016, and his sentencing was set for October 17, 2016.

Court records state that from April 2012 to February 2015, Damacio handled a criminal informant involved in the widespread sale and distribution of methamphetamine while working as a police officer for the Bakersfield Police Department (BPD). Despite being fully aware of the informant’s persistent illegal behavior, Damacio continued to handle the informant.

During this time, the informant bribed Damacio in exchange for information about law enforcement activities as well as protection from surveillance and arrest. While employed by the BPD, Diaz illegally accepted bribes and engaged in drug trafficking. On September 20, 2012, while performing his work duties, Damacio stopped a vehicle driven by two individuals from Yakima, Washington and conducted a search of the vehicle using a BPD police dog and a drug-sniffing dog.

During the investigation, a large cooler with several bags containing approximately 10 pounds of methamphetamine was found. The BPD dog handler did not remove any drugs from the vehicle; instead, he turned the situation over to Damacio and Mara, who took control of the methamphetamine seizure and oversaw the investigation of the case.

About a pound of methamphetamine from the traffic stop was taken into evidence by Damacio a week later. The remaining nine pounds of methamphetamine were kept by Damacio and Mara, who then sold it for their own profit. The plea agreement states that Damacio also filed a joint income tax return for 2012 that fraudulently listed $168,485 in gross income and omitted at least $97,900 in additional revenue.

Where is Damacio Diaz now?

In May 2020, news of Damacio Diaz’s release from prison after serving his sentence made headlines. He was released from a Sacramento detention center, according to the Federal Bureau of Prisons. Both received reduced sentences. His partner, Mara, was released in April of that year after serving less than four years in federal prison.

Damacio has not updated his LinkedIn. His profile says he has been a detective with the Bakersfield Police Department since July 1998. From 1996 to 1998, Damacio worked as a police officer with the Tulare Police Department. Additionally, Damacio completed his high school education at McFarland High School. He attended the College of the Sequoias from 1990 to 1992.

Damacio then earned his Bachelor of Science in Criminology/Military Science from California State University, Fresno.

On his FB, Damacio announced that he is now retired and enjoying life with his wife and children.
