Woniya Thibeault from History Channel Alone: Frozen just made history by being crowned the show’s first female winner. The spinoff’s finale premiered on September 22, 2022, and fans saw some of the show’s favorites from previous seasons return to survive in the wilderness once again, this time on frozen Canadian soil—dropped onto the North Atlantic Coast of Labrador, Canada just as winter was coming.
The final two contestants on the show were Michelle Finn from Season 8 and Woniya from Season 7. Michelle dropped out after 38 days, leaving Woniya as the winner and the last woman standing in the finale. She also received a cash prize of $500,000.
According to her History Channel biography, Woniya is an ancestral skills teacher. She shares that she can’t remember a time when her connection to the natural world around her wasn’t a major focus of her life. She spent her childhood swimming in local lakes and rivers and learning the names of wildflowers.
As an adult, Woniya spent time studying biology and running barefoot in the forest to learn traditional skills such as tanning, sewing deer hides, bow making, basket weaving, the art of weaving, etc.
Woniya stated that her goal this season was to explore the level of connection, comfort, and sustainability she could achieve in a wild landscape, even as she pushed her limits in the experience. When she appeared in season 6, she honed her skills using fishing line.
