Early life and education
Lionel Brockman Richie Jr. was born on June 20, 1949, to Lionel Brockman Richie Sr. and Alberta R. Foster in Tuskegee, Alabama. He attended Joliet Township High School, East Campus.
He was the best tennis player in school and received a tennis scholarship, but he dropped out of college to pursue a music career and make a name for himself in the industry.
Rear Admiral
Richie formed a series of R&B groups while attending Tuskegee University. He joined the Commodores in 1968 as a vocalist and saxophone player. The band signed a one-record deal with Atlantic Records in 1968 before joining Motown Records in 1969.
They performed as a support act for The Jackson 5. They had albums like “Machine Gun” and “Brick House.” Richie’s romantic ballads, like “Still,” “Easy,” “Three Times a Lady,” and “Sail On,” became increasingly popular during that time.
His first commercial success as a songwriter came with the song “Happy People.” In 1980, he wrote “Lady” for Kenny Rogers, which reached number one, and the following year he produced Rogers’ album Share Your Love.
Richie performed the theme song for the film Endless Love in 1981, which went on to become one of Motown’s biggest singles and topped the pop charts in many countries and the United States.
Richie began his solo career in 1982, thanks to the popularity of the album. In 1983, Skyler Jett took over as lead singer of the Commodores, and he was replaced by him.

Solo career
Richie’s debut solo album, Lionel Richie, was released in 1982 and featured three hit singles: “Truly”, which reached number one in the United States, as well as “You Are” and “My Love”, which reached number five.
The album debuted at number three on the Billboard 200 and went on to sell over four million copies. His second album “Can’t slow down” was one of the best-selling albums of all time, spawning the No. 1 singles “All Night Long (All Night)” and “Hello.” He collaborated with Michael Jackson on the 1985 charity album “We Are the World,” which sold more than 20 million copies. The No. 1 song was “Say You, Say Me.”
As a result, the pair of number 1 title tracks from his third album, Terpsichore on the Ceiling (1986), were both hits. Richie took a recording hiatus from 1986 to 1996, but has since returned with seven studio albums.
Richie’s albums in the 1990s were less popular than his previous three. Richie has had six UK Top 40 singles since 2004. Richie released “Just Go” in 2009 and “Tuskegee”, his tenth studio album, in 2012.
In recent years, Richie has achieved incredible success and has become very popular in many Arab countries. Morocco, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt and African countries are some of the countries where he has performed.
Richie was awarded an honorary Doctor of Music degree from Berklee College of Music and received a Kennedy Center Award in 2017. That same year, it was reported that Richie had acquired the rights to produce a biopic about Curtis Mayfield.
