Machine Gun Kelly tells the story of his complicated relationship with his late father who was tried for murder when he was only 9 years old.

Machine Gun Kelly has opened up about his relationship with his late father and how it influenced his life and music.

In a recent interview on the podcast “Dumb Blonde,” Machine Gun Kelly, whose real name is Colson Baker, shared that his father, who passed away on July 5, 2020, was tried at the age of 9 for murdering his father.

“The story told to me is always [his] “My dad dropped the gun and his head exploded,” the rapper-turned-pop-punk-turned-country star told host Bunnie XO. “All of that happened in the same room with my dad when I was nine years old. So he and my grandmother were tried for murder. They were both acquitted.”

Kelly recalled his late father struggling with depression and other mental health issues brought on by the traumatic event and said he was “inspired” by his father’s “emotional” personality.

“In my situation with my dad, he went through some of the craziest things I could imagine a kid going through,” the musician said.

He continued, “The emotional side of everything I got from my dad, who was very, you know, he wore everything on his sleeve. His depression was very evident; his need for love was very [obvious]. I wish I could have told him before he passed away that I was really inspired by the way he was emotional. I think it’s cool looking back because I was so emotional too.”

Kelly admitted that as a child, he “hated” and was “angry” at his father because “[freaking] go out” if he heard a loud noise or if his son scared him.

Kelly said as a result he believes he has “fought back from all that trauma by becoming the person I always wanted to be as a father, which is hard, and shaking things off and fighting whoever attacks you”.

Kelly also discussed his relationship with his mother during his podcast appearance. When the artist was just 9 years old, his mother left the family, and he and his father moved to Denver, Colorado to live with his aunt.

“I want to be clear, I love my mother very much, and I distorted the truth about her a lot in the early stages of my career,” the rapper confessed. “And not distorting the truth in the sense of not telling the truth. I told my truth, but I didn’t give the public a chance to know her truth.”

The two have reconciled in recent years, although he has expressed resentment that she did not seek him out after she left her family.
