Mariechan Luiters was born into the Luiters family on 1 November 1982. Her parents were both South African and she grew up in Stellenbosch.

After becoming friends with two other great singers, Jacqui Carpede and Liesl Penniken, the three entered the Coca-Cola Pop Music Talent Contest as the band Jamali. The contest took place in 2004.
