Early life and education
Mark Drakeford, born 19 September 1954 in Carmarthen, West Wales, attended Queen Elizabeth Grammar School in Carmarthen. He then studied Latin at the University of Kent before graduating from the University of Exeter.

Mark Drakeford, 69, was married to Clare Buckle for 46 years until her death in 2023. They had three children, Jonathan, James and Elin. During their marriage, they lived in the beautiful Pontcanna neighbourhood of Cardiff for more than three decades.
In a show of immense love and care during the challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic, Drakeford made the selfless decision to move into a building in the back garden of his home. The move was motivated by a desire to protect Clare and her mother, who were considered vulnerable to the virus.
