early life and education
Marc Haydel Morial was born on January 3, 1958 in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA.
He is the son of teacher and university administrator Sybil Haydel Morial and the late Ernest N. “Dutch” Morial, the first African American mayor of New Orleans. Son of N. “Dutch” Morial).
He grew up with his siblings Jacques Morial, Cheri Morial, Monique Morial and Julie Morial big.
Morrill attended Jesuit High School, receiving his diploma in 1976. He earned a bachelor’s degree in economics and African American studies from the University of Pennsylvania in 1980.
After completing his undergraduate degree at the University of Pennsylvania in 1980 and earning his doctorate from Georgetown University Law Center in 1983, Morrill began a distinguished career in public service and political leadership. Morrill later served as president of the U.S. Conference of Mayors from 2001 to 2002 and served as chief spokesman for U.S. cities. In 2003, he was elected leader of the civil rights organization National Urban League.
While at the National Urban League, Morrill added a new metric called the “Equality Index” to the organization’s 2004 annual “State of Black America” report.
He has also written two nonfiction books, lectured, wrote a weekly newspaper column, and published a weekly newsletter called “ReMarcs.”
In addition to his leadership roles, Morrill has served in advisory roles, including chairing the 2010 Census Advisory Committee and chairing the President’s Advisory Committee on Financial Capabilities from 2012 to 2015. President Bill Clinton also appointed him to serve on the Commission on the Twenty-First Century Workforce from 1998 to 2000.
