Of Beetles and Angels was also selected as the first Evanston, Illinois citywide reading program with events planned throughout the 2007–2008 school year.
Waukegan High School even named their Monday Advisory Lesson Plan ad “Mawi Monday,” where students do different activities related to Mawi Asgedom. He visited middle school readers throughout the year.

Early life
Mawi Asgedom was born on September 29, 1976 in Adi Wahla in Tigray province, Ethiopia.
His siblings are Tewolde Asgedom, Mehret Asgedom, Mulu Asgedom and Hntsa Asgedom.
His father and mother’s names are Haileab Asgedom and Tsege Asgedom respectively. After three years in a refugee camp in Sudan, they all went to America. Mawi Asgedom was only seven years old at that time. Life in America is wonderful for both him and his family.
They stayed in the Chicago suburb of Wheaton, Illinois, where he played on his high school basketball and track teams. He is the best in the league due to his dedication and hard work.
He took his studies very seriously and graduated with honors from Harvard University, receiving a degree in American history. Because he was a very confident and articulate person, he had the opportunity to speak at the graduation ceremony in 1999.
