Early life and education
Maxwell Lewis was born on July 27, 2002 in Las Vegas, Nevada, United States. He was born to his parents, Jennifer Lewis and Robert Lewis, who were originally from Los Angeles, California.
Robert moved the family to Las Vegas for work and became heavily involved in Maxwell’s basketball journey, coaching youth leagues. Maxwell has five siblings: Mario, Myloe, Marcus, Monique and Gabby.
His older brother Marcus played football at Iowa State, and younger sister Monique ran track and field at UNLV. Myloe also played soccer at Victory Valley College. Maxwell attended Pepperdine University, where he played college basketball for the Pepperdine Waves.

Career
Lewis has been passionate about basketball since he was a child, playing throughout his childhood. However, he was forced to stop playing organized basketball as an elementary school student at the request of his father, who believed that his coach was mistreating him.
When Lewis reached high school, his first school, Somerset-Losee, did not have a basketball team his first year. As a result, he played junior basketball at Mojave High School, a neighboring school.
Somerset-Losee did not introduce a men’s basketball team until Lewis’ sophomore year. Lewis thrived in this environment, averaging an impressive 28 points and 13 rebounds per game.
Lewis’ standout performance attracted the attention of college recruiters, but the high-level offers he previously received dried up. He eventually accepted a scholarship to play for the Pepperdine Waves under coach Lorenzo Romar.
During his freshman season with the Waves, Lewis missed the first few games because the NCAA reviewed his eligibility after participating in a preparatory program called Chameleon BX, designed to prepare players for the NBA Draft.
That year he played as a reserve, averaging 11 points per game. Lewis moved into the starting lineup during his sophomore season and averaged 16.6 points per game, earning a spot on the All-WCC Second Team.
His strong performance caught the attention of NBA executives, and on March 20, 2023, he declared for the 2023 NBA Draft. The Denver Nuggets selected him 40th overall overall and his rights were traded to the Los Angeles Lakers.
