Early life
Maya Jama grew up in Bristol, where she was born, and attended Cotham School. She was born on August 14, 1994.
She has Swedish ancestry on her mother’s side and Somali ancestry on her father’s side. Maya Jama’s mother, Sadie Jama, named her after American author and poet Maya Angelou when she was 19 years old.
Omar Jama is also her brother. Maya Jama’s father, Mr. Jama, spent most of his youth behind bars for violent acts such as fights and bar brawls. When she was 12 years old, she decided not to visit her father in prison anymore and she did so for ten years.

Maya Jama moved to London in 2012 to seek a career in media as an actress, TV presenter and fashion model. She initially wanted to become an actress, but then she realized that she could be more comfortable as a host.

In her teens, Maya Jama made her debut by hosting a weekly music video countdown show on JumpOff.TV. She then worked for Sky UK on TRACE Sports. She served as host of Maya Jama’s FIFA World Cup Cities for Copa90 in 2014, a travel magazine focusing on Brazil’s 2014 FIFA World Cup.
She also shares hosting duties for the nine-part World Cup Taxi series on Copa90. She began working for MTV as the host of The Wrap Up in August 2014. She hosted the weekday show Rinse FM #DriveWithMaya from 2014 to 2017. She joined BBC Radio 1 in 2018 and now co-hosts the show every Friday with Scott Mills and Chris Stark, as well as The Radio 1’s greatest hits on Saturday.
