Josh Liechty With A Girl Named Tom On Voice
A brother and sister band from Ohio called “Girl Named Tom,” who formed in the spring of 2019, has been wowing the judges ever since they entered “The Voice” season 21. They came on the singing competition show and performed “Helplessly Hoping” by Crosby, Stills, and Nash. They have been a part of the four judges on the show. But in the end, they chose Kelly Clarkson as their coach.
During the competition round, the band sang Stevie Wonder’s ‘Seven Bridges Road’ as they faced off against Kinsey Rose, another contestant, and won. Then, during the elimination round, they sang Radiohead’s ‘Creep’ followed by Dust in the Wind by Kansas in Live Top 13.
‘Girl Name Tom’ made it to the Top 11 after qualifying. They performed More Hearts Than Mine by Ingrid Andress. In the Top 10, they sang Viva la Vida by Coldplay. In the semi-finals, they performed ‘River’ by Joni Mitchell.
So how exactly did the band come about, one might wonder. Don’t worry because we have covered that here. Music was not just a passion for the three siblings; Caleb, Joshua and Bekah. They loved music and performed individually but it was their mother who suggested forming a band together. She advised her children to take a year off and do something to pursue their music career. And their father’s health also played a big role in them pursuing music. He probably never considered all three of them pursuing music as a career. As for the band name, it comes from a family memory.
As a child, Joshua used to give people nicknames, including their dogs. When Bekah was born, Josh started calling him Thomas, and that’s where the band’s name, ‘Girl Named Tom’, came from. The band focuses on acoustic pop with an emphasis on smooth harmonies.
Josh is the percussionist, Caleb plays guitar, and Bekah is adept at keyboards. They released a five-song EP in 2019 and went on a year-long tour in 2020. You can read more about their tour here.
The Liechty family gave up childhood days in church choirs, piano lessons and pots and pans percussion to pursue professional musical careers, with a polished repertoire of original compositions and modern interpretations of songs.
