Carolyn Michelle Smith attended an international private elementary school in the Washington, DC area as a child. In 2002, she received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theater from Fordham University at Lincoln Center in New York.

In 2008, Carolyn entered the prestigious Juilliard School, where she studied Dramatic Arts. She also studied acting and theater at the Midsummer Academy of British-American Dramatic Arts in Oxford.

After graduating, Carolyn was cast in Katori Hall’s latest play ‘WHADDABLOODCLOT!!!’ at the Williamstown Theatre Festival. She then made her Off-Broadway debut in ‘Hit The Wall’ at the Barrow Street Theatre.

Carolyn made her Broadway debut in the 2013 play Romeo and Juliet, starring Orlando Bloom and Condola Rashad, directed by David Leveaux. Carolyn’s other stage credits include Soldier X (Ma-Yi Theater Company, NYC) and Serial. Black. Face (Juilliard/Signature Theater, NYC).

In 2014, Carolyn joined the award-winning Netflix series House of Cards, starring Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright. She played Willa Penton, Claire Underwood’s (Robin Wright) chief of staff, in Seasons 2 and 3 of the show.

The Chi star also collaborated with Oscar-winning director Steve McQueen on HBO’s Codes of Conduct and Producer-Director Jonathan Starch on NBC’s Law and Order.

Carolyn stars in another Netflix hit show, Russian Doll Season 2, playing Agnes, Alan’s (Charlie Barnett) grandmother.
