What comes easy doesn’t last. This couldn’t be better illustrated than in Netflix’s Untold: The Rise and Fall of AND1 — the story of how the international basketball brand AND1 quickly fell apart. And it has a lot to do with brand co-founder Seth Berger.
So, who is he? Keep reading Seth Berger Biography to learn all about him.
Meet Seth Berger, Co-Founder of AND1 on Netflix Not to mention: The rise and fall of AND1
Seth Berger was largely unknown to the world until Netflix’s Untold: The Rise and Fall of AND1 premiered in August 2022. The documentary about the influential streetwear-inspired basketball brand brought back memories of when AND1 sneakers and streetball were all the rage in the ’90s. And it seems Seth was the man behind it.
Seth was passionate about basketball from a young age. He even played a year of junior varsity basketball and then college football at the University of Pennsylvania. However, he chose politics after earning his BA in Economics in 1989 and went on to serve on Capitol Hill for two years before enrolling in an MBA at Wharton.
But that didn’t mean he gave up basketball. “I probably spent four to eight hours playing basketball for every hour I spent studying,” he recalls. Waking up every day thinking about basketball, Seth then started thinking about ways he could build his own basketball business.
So in 1993, the same year they graduated, Seth, his childhood friend (and Stanford grad) Jay Gilbert, and his Wharton basketball buddy Tom Austin launched AND1 as a throwback apparel business. The brand eventually branched out into sneakers and street basketball, and before they knew it, AND1 was the next big thing.
Seth Berger Net Worth
Seth Berger boasts a net worth of over $15 million in 2022.
The former CEO of AND1 certainly made a fortune from the company. But his career didn’t end when he sold everything in 2005 due to lack of revenue before it was too late. In fact, the same year he left AND1, Seth took on a part-time CEO role at another startup, Lightning Poker. There, he helped the company raise $1 million in funding, create an automated poker table, and negotiate an international distribution deal with Shufflemaster, all within the span of a year!
In 2007, Seth joined Westtown School as the Head Boys Basketball Coach, and he continued to do so for over 15 years. His teams reportedly had a 73 percent winning percentage, and they won the league championship nine times and the state championship in 2016, 2017, 2020, and 2022.
During his time as a coach, from 2011 to 2012, Seth also funded a small project in the mobile gaming field, GravyTrain. Sadly, although the idea was well executed, the market for these games began to collapse and Seth closed the business.
Additionally, in 2016, he joined the Sixers Innovation Lab Crafted by Kimball as executive director.
Seth Berger’s wife
Seth Berger married his wife Christelle (née Williams) Berger on September 15, 1996. The two first met while they were both attending the University of Pennsylvania. At the time, Seth was still working for AND1 while Christelle was a track star.
Fast forward to over 25 years later, the couple is happier than ever. “25 years on, Infiniti is gone. My wife, best friend, greatest teammate in the world, my Queen of Spades. God blessed me with you and I am forever grateful. Happy Anniversary CW, I love you to the moon and back,” Seth posted on his IG on their 25th wedding anniversary.
But that wasn’t the only time Seth complimented his wife. From holidays to birthdays, Christelle was a regular at her husband’s social events.
Christelle turned 55 on February 17, 2022. At that time, she worked as an athletics coach.
Interesting Facts: Christelle is the daughter of Dan Williams (died March 23, 2014) and Rosie Williams.
