He explained to Dragzine, “Growing up, I had a couple of cousins who were about seven years older than me — I was about seven or eight and they were sixteen — and just watching them play with their cars on the street, I wanted to go faster than them. I think that’s where I got the fever.”

He shared that he loved to drive crazy. Larry and his friends would go to a bridge in Virginia at 12 or 1 a.m. and race until the police chased them away.

Larry pursued his passion for racing and had a 64 Chevy Nova that he raced on 275 drag radials. But, the engine would blow up after every race or two and it would cost him a fortune to fix it. After a race in Georgia, he and his wife went to their drag car and he announced that he was quitting street racing forever.

But No Prep Kings came to his town, just a two-hour drive from home. There were only two spots left to fill, so he signed up and competed against nearly 50 other riders. However, on race day, only a handful of people showed up, including him, to race and win spots.

Larry shared that he had the best time of his life racing at No Prep. He shared that he loved it because it brought him back to his roots. He raced in Kansas and earned enough points that he raced the rest of the season on the show.

Larry has the most recognizable cars in No Prep because he has a giant axe on the front of his 1963 Chevy II and another on the trunk lid. After racing radials and events for two years, he ditched his small tires for big tires.

Outside of racing, Larry “Axman” Roach owns a logging business. That’s where his “Axman” name comes from. As a child in rural Virginia, he watched his father and uncles work in the logging industry. So it was inevitable that he would join the family business.

Larry explained to Dragzine, “Growing up where I grew up – living on a mile-long dirt road – we were poor, looking back. When you grow up as a kid, you don’t realize you’re poor, and you don’t have any money. I mean, we ended up playing barefoot; we didn’t know anything. We lived it up! We had our family, that’s all we had. So we lived it up!”

Larry shared in one of his YouTube videos that the race was 10 hours a week but his logging business was 60 or 70 hours a week. He registered a company called Axman Enterprises, Inc., which is responsible for managing his logging business, registered in December 2009 under Open Corporates.
