Early life and education
Mele Kolo Kyari OFR was born on January 8, 1965 in Maiduguri, Borno State, Nigeria.
He was raised by his parents, whose names are unknown but can be called Mr. and Mrs. Kyari. Mele has an older brother named Abba Kyari.
Mele Kyari attended Government Community Secondary School Biu in Borno State from 1977 to 1982.

He later joined the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) where he held various roles including Exploration Geophysicist at the National Petroleum Investment Management Services (NAPIMS) and Seismic Data Processing Geophysicist at a subsidiary of NNPC.
In 1991, Kyari joined NNPC as a Process Geophysicist at Integrated Data Services Limited. In 2007, he headed the Production Sharing Contract Management Unit at the Crude Oil Marketing Department (COMD).
He was promoted to General Director of Crude Oil Storage Management in 2014; in 2015, he became General Director of COMD Group.
In 2018, Kyari became Nigeria’s National Representative to the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).
Following Maikanti Baru’s retirement in 2019, Kyari was appointed by President Muhammadu Buhari as the 19th Group Managing Director (GMD) of NNPC.
