Mia Le Roux makes history as South Africa’s first deaf beauty queen

At the SunBet Arena in Pretoria, Mia Le Roux made history when she was crowned Miss South Africa 2024. She became the first deaf woman to win the prestigious title. The 28-year-old model and marketing executive from Oudtshoorn, Western Cape, beat nine other contestants to claim the crown.

Diagnosed with severe hearing loss at the age of one, Le Roux attributes her success to the unwavering support of the community that helped her gain the ability to hear. This experience fueled her passion for making a positive impact and breaking barriers. In her acceptance speech, Le Roux said, “I am proud to be a deaf South African woman and I know what it feels like to be excluded. I hope my win will inspire others who feel marginalized to pursue their wildest dreams, just like I did.“ .

Le Roux’s victory comes after a contest marred by controversy, including the withdrawal of finalist Chidimma Adetshina, who resigned amid allegations that her mother may have stolen the identity of a South African woman. Adetshina has been at the centre of a social media uproar, with many questioning her eligibility to represent South Africa.

Despite the controversy surrounding her win, Le Roux’s victory was widely praised. Deaf South Africa praised her achievement, with Jabaar Cassiem Mohamed, Western Cape Director of Deaf SA, stating, “It’s heartwarming to see a disabled person succeed in a national beauty pageant.“ .

Now a part-time BCom Marketing student, Le Roux balances her studies with modelling and marketing management work. Her journey to the crown included a standout performance on reality TV show “The Crown Hunters”, where she impressed viewers by winning multiple episodes.
