Mmusi Aloysias Maimane, born 6 June 1980, is a 44-year-old prominent South African politician.

He is best known for being the former Leader of the opposition Democratic Alliance (DA) party of South Africa from 10 May 2015 to 23 October 2019.

He is also the former Leader of the Opposition in the South African Parliament from 29 May 2014 to 24 October 2019.

Additionally, he is a former DA leader at the Johannesburg City Council and the DA’s National Spokesperson.

In 2011, Mmusi Maimane was elected as the DA’s Johannesburg mayoral candidate in the 2011 municipal elections, but he did not win.

Mmusi Maimane is also a pastor and elder in the conservative Free Church, and he founded the One South Africa Movement in 2020.

Early life

Mmusi Maimane was born on 6 June 1980 at Leratong Hospital in Krugersdorp (a city now known as Gauteng) in South Africa.

His mother, Ethel Maimane, grew up in Cofimvaba in the Eastern Cape, and his father, Simon Maimane, was born in Soweto, South Africa.

His parents met in 1977 and married in 1980 in Dobsonville, Soweto.

Mmusi Maimane grew up in Soweto, where he attended primary school and university.

He is the first child of his parents and has three other brothers and sisters, so the family has four children.

Education

Mmusi Maimane graduated from Allen Glenn High School in 1997. After high school, he attended the University of South Africa and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology.

He did not stop at just a university degree but continued his studies at the University of Witwatersrand, where he obtained a Master of Public Administration certificate.

Career

Mmusi Maimane applied to run as a DA candidate for Johannesburg City Council and ran internally as a DA candidate for Mayor of Johannesburg in 2010. He was appointed DA National Spokesperson in 2011.

At the 2012 DA Federal Congress, Mmusi Maimane was elected Deputy Federal President after running alongside eight other candidates interested in the same position.

In 2013, Mmusi Maimane ran as the DA candidate for the 2013 Gauteng Premiership. He was elected internally within his DA party and stood as the candidate for the 2014 Gauteng Premiership on behalf of the DA.

On 18 April 2015, at the Western Cape DA Congress, Mmusi Maimane revealed his ambition to run for Federal Leader of the DA at the Federal Congress to be elected in May 2015, and he was elected on 10 May 2015, receiving the support of nearly 90% of the voting delegates with the particular support of Herman Mashaba, an influential businessman.
