Mollie said: “It was terrible having to play goalkeeper against her. “I always bend over, because every time I put my arm or hand out, I hurt it.”

At age 12, she told her parents she needed to leave her local club and drive three hours round trip every day to play for Real Colorado. It is a sacrifice for everyone. For Sophia, that means leaving school early to avoid rush hour and putting her organizational skills to good use tracking tasks from the car.

Mollie has a new job that allows her the flexibility to take Sophia to and from training sessions. The group practices four or five times a week – not enough for Sophia, who often coaxes Kenny or Mollie to take her on her days off for extra training.

“I will never complain,” Mollie remembers saying. “I will never complain once. Can I go down there and play soccer?”
