Mthokozisi Yende was born on 7 June 1984 in Tembisa, a town in Johannesburg, South Africa. He grew up in a poor and crime-ridden area, where football was a popular escape for many young people.
He started playing football at a young age and joined local club, Tembisa Classic when he was 12 years old. He showed potential and talent as a midfielder and attracted the attention of scouts from bigger clubs.
