Early life
Michael Lawrence Tyler was born on September 22, 1970, in New Orleans, Louisiana, to Marie Tyler. His father died when he was seven years old. His mother raised him and his two siblings, Michelle and Maurice, alone.
Mystikal attended Cohen High School before joining the United States Army as a combat engineer. From a very young age, he wanted to be a rapper and performed for Run-DMC and Doug E. Fresh.
It was an outdoor event at the Treme Center that caught the attention of Big Boy Records music producer Leroy “Precise” Edwards, who offered Mystikal a music contract.
Music career
Mystikal released his self-titled debut album in 1994 through the independent record label Big Boy Records. Following its release, he found himself in conflict with other New Orleans rappers including UNLV, BG, and Lil Wayne.
He released “The Mind of Mystikal” in 1995 after signing with Jive Records, primarily featuring songs from his debut album. Mystikal left Big Boy in 1996 while still under contract with Jive to join No Limit Records.

Personal life
Mystikal has dated several women, including American singers Nivea (2000–2001) and Monica, and Karrine Steffans (2001). He has two children, Million Tyler and Michelle Tyler.
In 1994, Mystikal found her sister Michelle dead in her home after being stabbed and strangled. Damion Neville, her boyfriend and the nephew of one of the famous Neville brothers, was arrested and charged.
Attack and capture
In 2003, Mystikal admitted to sexually assaulting his hairdresser and was sentenced to six years in prison. He forced the woman to perform oral sex on him and two of his bodyguards and claimed that she stole $80,000 in checks.
Mystikal initially argued that the encounter was consensual, but shortly after the charges were filed, a videotape of the incident was discovered at his residence. Mystikal was charged with two federal misdemeanor counts of failure to pay taxes.
That was in 1998 and 1999, and in 2005, while he was still in prison for state sexual battery and extortion charges, he was found guilty of tax crimes in federal court next year.
But he was allowed to serve one year of the federal sentence alongside the six-year state sentence. He registered as a sex offender upon his release in 2010.
Mystikal is arrested again in 2012 after an argument with his partner. After being held for nine days, he was finally released on bail. He was given another three-month prison sentence for violating the terms of his probation.
