Early life
Atiim Kiambu is the son of James Barber, a World Series standout wide receiver at Virginia Tech, and Geraldine Barber, a hard-working mother who often worked two jobs to support her three sons.
Barber grew up with two older brothers, Tarik Barber and Ronde Barber, a former Tampa Bay Buccaneers linebacker and safety and also his twin brother, born seven minutes before Tiki.
Professional football career
Barber was drafted by the New York Giants in the second round of the 1997 NFL Draft. Using his kick return and receiving skills, he gained 1,639 all-purpose yards.
Barber’s career year for running yards was 2005, the Giants’ comeback year. The following year, he set a new record. His 95-yard touchdown run broke Hap Moran’s 91-yard record for the longest Giants touchdown run.
He was nominated for the FedEx Ground Player of the Year award in 2005. Barber also signed a contract extension in 2005, which ran through 2008 and doubled his earnings.
Career after football
Barber’s responsibilities as a correspondent for Today included hosting a lifestyle show and reporting on breaking news issues. Barber’s highlight of 2006 was a lunch with Condoleezza Rice.
