He received his secondary education at Agulu Grammar School.
He then went to the prestigious University of Ibadan (UI) to study Theatre Arts. He graduated with honours in 1979.
He also trained at the Colorado Film Institute.
He completed his mandatory National Youth Service Corps in 1980.
Profession
After retiring from the military, Obi found work as a broadcaster at the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), Aba branch. While at the station, he wrote, directed and produced television series and documentaries.
He also hosted a news show on NTA. He worked at the station for 18 years, from 1981 to 1999.
Obi’s acting career spanned over three decades and he has appeared in many Nigerian films. In 1985, he starred in the Nigerian film adaptation of Chinua Achebe’s novel Things Fall Apart.
Other films he has acted in include The Trip, King of Kings, Venom, Not Alone, Falling in Love with You, My Father’s Love, Royal Trick, etc.
He is the founder and CEO of the production company Idejimba Films.
In 2019, he produced the film Bright As A Diamond.

In 2011, he joined the University of Nigeria, Nsukka as a lecturer. For the past nine years, he has been teaching in the Department of Theatre and Film Studies.

Obi Okolie has a happy married life. He has been married for 34 years. He and his wife Ajay Okolie got married on December 5, 1987. The wedding ceremony took place at St. Michael’s Cathedral in Aba.
Their union was blessed with children and grandchildren.
His first child, Adaobi Okoli, was born in 1987. Obi Okoli is also the father of Uju Okoli, a famous Nigerian movie industry actress.
