Early life and education
Orrin Grant Hatch was born on March 22, 1934, in Homestead, Pennsylvania, to Jesse Hatch and Helen France Hatch. He had eight siblings, two of whom died as infants.
His brother Jesse was a nose turret gunner in the United States Air Force and was killed in action in 1945. Hatch was the first member of his family to attend college, earning a BA in history from Brigham Young University in 1959.
He also competed in 11 amateur boxing bouts and attended the University of Pittsburgh School of Law to study law. Hatch practiced law in Pittsburgh before moving to Utah in 1969.
Senatorial Career
Hatch was elected to the United States Senate in 1976, defeating Democratic candidate Frank Moss, who had served three terms.
Music and film career
Orrin Hatch is passionate about music and has appeared in several films. He is a pianist, violinist, and organist. As an LDS music recording artist, he has earned over $10,000.
“Eight Days of Hanukkah” was written by Hatch, who also worked on the recording. Madeline Stone wrote the music for the song. In the early 1970s, Hatch worked as a band manager for Free Agency, a Mormon-themed folk band.
Frank Zappa composed a guitar piece called “Orrin Hatch On Skis” for his 1988 album Guitar. Orrin Hatch and Janice Kapp Perry co-wrote the song “Heal Our Land,” which was performed at George W. Bush’s inauguration in 2005.
In 1997, they released “My God Is Love,” a CD from Tree Music, and then “Come to the Manger.” Hatch made a cameo appearance in a scene at a cocktail party in Washington, DC, in Steven Soderbergh’s Oscar-winning film Traffic.
