Early life and education
Paul Gascoigne, 57, was born in Gateshead, England, on May 27, 1967. He grew up in a working-class family, his father John Gascoigne was a bricklayer, and his mother Carol Gascoigne was a cleaner. Gascoigne and his siblings Carl, Lindsay and Annemarie had a simple upbringing in the town of Gateshead.
He was named Paul John Gascoigne, in honor of Paul McCartney and John Lennon of The Beatles, and his grandparents were of Irish descent.
He attended Brackenbeath Junior School and later Heathfield High School in the Low Fell area of Gateshead. Gascoigne was noticed by football scouts while playing for Gateshead Boys but did not perform well on trial with Ipswich Town.
Despite his success on the football field, Gascoigne’s childhood was marked by turmoil and tragedy. He witnessed the death of a friend’s younger brother in a car accident when he was ten, while around the same time his father began to suffer epileptic seizures.
personal life
Gascoigne tied the knot with his long-term partner Cheryl Firth in Hatfield, Hertfordshire, in July 1996, after dating for about six years.
He later admitted to being violent towards Cheryl during their marriage. They officially divorced in early 1999. In 2009, Cheryl published a tell-all book titled Stronger: My Way of Survival.
Gascoigne and Cheryl have a son, Reagan, and have adopted two children from Cheryl’s previous marriage, Mason and Bianca. Bianca is a well-known model and television personality who has appeared on reality TV shows Love Island.
The friendship between Gascoigne, Danny Baker and Chris Evans was well known during the 1990s, with Gascoigne appearing regularly on Talksport and TFI Friday.
In October 2004, Gascoigne announced that he wished to be known as G8, a combination of his surname’s initials and his shirt number, as it symbolised “greatness”.
Profession
In the 1984-85 season, Gascoigne led the Newcastle United youth team to win the FA Youth Cup and scored twice against Watford in the final. The first leg ended in a 0-0 draw, and teammate Joe Aaron pointed out that Newcastle had performed poorly.
Gascoigne played a key role in the second leg and caught the eye of manager Jack Charlton. Despite Charlton’s promise of first-team action, Gascoigne was not selected for the next game against Norwich City.
In 1985, Gascoigne made his first-team debut, replacing George Reilly against Queens Park Rangers. Charlton’s manager felt that Gascoigne’s playing time was insufficient, but Gascoigne signed a contract with Newcastle United and Charlton offered him a generous salary.
In the 1985-86 season, under manager Willie McFall, Gascoigne replaced Chris Waddle and scored his first goal against Oxford United. He continued his excellent form the following season, scoring five goals in 24 league games as Newcastle United finished 17th in the First Division.
