Peter Gregory Obi CON, born 19 July 1961, is a Nigerian politician and businessman. He ran as the vice presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2019 Nigerian general elections and aspires to become the president of Nigeria in the 2023 elections.

He is also a presidential candidate in the 2023 Nigerian general election. He served as governor of Anambra State from 17 March 2006 to 2 November 2006, when he was impeached, and from 9 February 2007 to 29 May 2007, after his impeachment was overturned.

Although new elections were held on 29 April 2007, Peter Obi was reappointed governor on 14 June 2007, following a court ruling that he should be allowed to complete his four-year term. He was re-elected for a second term in the gubernatorial elections on 6 February 2010.

Early life and education

Peter Obi was born in Onitsha on 19 July 1961. He is a native of Anambra State, Nigeria. His siblings are Bibiana Adani, Ndibe Obi, Fabian Obi and Martina Obi. Now 63 years old, he is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Obi.

He completed his secondary education at Christ the King College in Onitsha. He entered the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, in 1980 and graduated in 1984 with a BA (Hons) in philosophy.

Peter Obi attended Lagos Business School in Nigeria where he completed the Executive Director Program, and Harvard Business School in Boston, Massachusetts where he completed two programs, the London School of Economics, Columbia Southwest School in New York, New York, USA and the Institute for Management Development in Switzerland where he also received two certificates in the Senior Executive Director Program and the Executive Director Program.

Peter Obi also studied at the Kellogg Graduate School of Management in the United States, the Said Business School at the University of Oxford and the George Business School at the University of Cambridge.

Peter Obi resigned on 29 May 2007, following the general elections, which Emmanuel Nnamdi Uba won. He went back to court, this time claiming that the four-year term he won in the 2003 elections only began when he took office in March 2006. On 14 June 2007, the Supreme Court of Nigeria upheld Peter Obi’s request and reinstated him.

This event essentially ended the tenure of Peter Obi’s successor, Andy Uba, whose election results on 14 April 2007 were annulled by the Supreme Court as Obi’s four-year term was supposed to continue until March 2010.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Peter Obi the winner of the 2010 Anambra State gubernatorial election, defeating Professor Charles Chukwuma Soludo, former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria. Governor Peter Obi’s election victory extended his tenure as governor of Anambra State for another four years. He completed his second term on 17 March 2014, handing over the governorship to Willie Obiano.

President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan appointed Peter Obi as chairman of the Nigerian Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) after the 2015 general elections.

On 12 October 2018, Peter Obi was named vice presidential candidate to Atiku Abubakar in the presidential election of the People’s Democratic Party in Nigeria. His party won second place.

On 24 March 2022, Peter Obi announced his intention to run for President of Nigeria on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party.

Personal life

Peter Obi married Margaret Brownson Usen in 1992 and the couple has two children. His daughter is Gabriella Nwamaka Frances Obi and a son is Gregory Peter Oseloka Obi. He is a devout Catholic.
