Peter Obi eyes SDP move on El-Rufai amid Labour Party turmoil, says former PDP spokesman

Former Atiku Abubakar/Ifeanyi Okowa Presidential Campaign spokesman, Daniel Bwala, has stirred controversy by claiming that former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, Peter Obi, is strategizing to leave the Labour Party amid internal strife and join forces with former Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai in the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

Bwala used his X account on Friday to reveal these allegations, suggesting that the possibility of Obi leaving Labor party stemmed from the ongoing crisis within the party, exacerbated by Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) threatens to seize control.

Peter Obi, who switched allegiance from People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to Labor party in May 2023 ahead of the general election, is said to be considering switching to the SDP due to the instability in his current political situation.

In his social media post, Bwala speculated on the political dynamics at play, alluding to a possible partnership between Obi and El-Rufai under the SDP banner. He referenced a legal ruling that affirmed NLC’s ownership of Labor partysignaled the coming involvement of the union in party affairs.

The political reshuffle story gained traction when El-Rufai was recently spotted at the SDP national secretariat in Abuja, sparking speculation about his possible joining the party. A viral video captured El-Rufai’s consultation visit to the SDP national chairman, Alhaji Shehu Musa Gabam, in which the former governor dismissed concerns over photos of the meeting circulating on social media.

It is worth noting that El-Rufai’s nomination as minister was not confirmed by the President of the Nigerian Senate Godswill Akpabio in August last year, along with nominees like Senators Abubakar Sani Danladi and Stella Okotete, due to unresolved security concerns.
