Early life
Phuthuma Nhleko was born in Gauteng, South Africa on 7 April 1960.

He attended St. Marks in Swaziland for high school.
He went to the US to attend college at Ohio State University, where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering in 1983.
He earned an MBA in Finance from Atlantic University in 1987.

Phuthuma Nhleko was the chairman of MTN Group for ten (10) years and during his time, MTN Direct expanded their operations from just 5 African countries and moved into 21 (21) African Countries and Middle East.
In addition to heading the MTN Group, Phuthuma Nhleko is also the chairman of the African International Investment Company. He resigned as Chairman of MTN Group in March 2011.
Phuthuma Nhleko also has a company called Arostyle Investments. An essential part of his career was the founding of Pembani Group Proprietary Limited with the late Max Maisela and others in 1994.
