Kim began acting at the age of 18. In theater, he played a variety of roles, focusing on Western classics such as Shakespeare, Chekhov, Ibsen, and Molière. He has worked in theater for most of his career. Frank Chin’s The Chicken Coop Chinaman, staged by the American Place Theater in 1972, was the first play written by an Asian American to be professionally performed in New York.
In 1977, Kim, Anne Occhiogrosso, and Charles Bright co-founded the American Players Theatre in Spring Green, Wisconsin. He is the theater’s talented and accomplished artistic director.
Kim appeared in Chin’s second television film, The Year of the Dragon, in 1974.
