On March 31, 1948, Polish immigrants Philip Perlman, manager of a doll accessories business, and Adele Perlman, a bookkeeper, welcomed Rhea Perlman into the world at Coney Island, Brooklyn.

She grew up in Bensonhurst, New York, by a Jewish family with Russian ties. She has an older sister, Heide Pearlman, who has worked as a writer, story editor and director for television shows such as Cheers, Frasier and The Tracy Ullman Show.
