early life
On March 31, 1948, Polish immigrants Philip Perlman, manager of a doll accessories business, and Adele Perlman, a bookkeeper, welcomed Rhea Perlman into the world at Coney Island, Brooklyn.
She grew up in Bensonhurst, New York, by a Jewish family with Russian ties. She has an older sister, Heide Pearlman, who has worked as a writer, story editor and director for television shows such as Cheers, Frasier and The Tracy Ullman Show.
Rhea Perlman’s parents moved to Los Angeles in the mid-1980s, and her father began working as an extra on Cheers. She is an alumna of Hunter College in New York, where she received her Bachelor of Arts in 1968.

Rhea Perlman made her debut in a brief waitress role in the Broadway production of Dracula Sabat, which ran from September 1970 to June 1971. She had a small role in the 1972 film Gauguin’s Hot Dogs.
