Early life and education
Rishi Sunak, the current Chancellor of the Exchequer of the United Kingdom, was born on 12 May 1980 in the prosperous city of Southampton, England. His parents, who were born in East Africa, made the courageous decision to move to England in search of a better life for themselves and their children.
Sunak’s father, Yashvir Sunak, is a respected general practitioner, while his mother, Usha Sunak, has dedicated her career to medicine. As fate would have it, Rishi is blessed with two younger siblings and has the honour of being the eldest of them all.
An interesting fact about him is that he has a sister named Raakhi Williams. Additionally, he was also honored to attend Winchester Collegea prestigious private boarding school.
After completing his studies there, Rishi Sunak pursued further studies at Lincoln CollegeOxford, where he focused on philosophy, politics and economics. Impressively, he achieved a remarkable first-class degree in 2001.
Career
Rishi Sunak entered politics in 2015 after winning the Richmond (Yorks) Conservative Party parliamentary election. He was appointed Minister for Local Government in 2018 and Chief Secretary to the Treasury in 2019. He took up the post of Chancellor of the Exchequer in February 2020.
Sunak, as Chancellor of the Exchequer, is responsible for overseeing the UK’s economic response to the COVID-19 pandemic. During this time, he has implemented a variety of measures, such as the furlough scheme and Eat Out to Help Out, to support businesses and individuals.
In October 2022, Boris Johnson’s leadership pushed Rishi Sunak to resign as Prime Minister. Sunak therefore began a campaign to secure the leadership of the Conservative Party. His efforts were successful when he won the leadership election and was subsequently sworn in as Prime Minister on 25 October 2022.
