Early life and education
Rita Ora was born on 26 November 1990 in Pristina, Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (now Kosovo) to Albanian parents. Her mother, Vera Ora, is a psychiatrist, while her father, Besnik Sahatciu, is a bar owner who studied economics.
Her mother is Catholic and her father is a nominal Muslim. She considers herself religious but not practising. Her maternal grandfather, Osman Bajraktari, was the Albanian consul to Russia (then part of the Soviet Union). Rita Ora’s grandfather, Besim Sahatçiu, was a film and theatre director.
Rita Ora has a younger brother named Don Ora and an older sister named Elena Ora. Rita Sahatçiu’s last name is derived from the Turkish word saatçi, meaning “watchmaker”, but her parents later added Ora (ora means “time” in Albanian) to the family name to make it easier to pronounce.
Her family left Kosovo for political reasons due to the persecution of Albanians that began after the breakup of Yugoslavia. They moved to London, England in 1991 when she was a newborn. Rita Ora grew up in Notting Hill, west London, and attended the Sylvia Young School of Drama, a performing arts school.
Personal life
From 2013 to June 2014, Rita Ora dated Scottish DJ Calvin Harris, and began dating American musician Andrew Watt in 2016, and the two dated for two years until September 2018.
The two reconciled in January 2019, but broke up for the second time in October 2019.

Profession
Rita Ora began performing at open mic nights around London, sometimes in her father’s pub. In 2008, she auditioned for BBC One’s Eurovision: Your Country Needs You to become the UK’s entry for the 2009 Eurovision Song Contest, but withdrew after a few episodes because she “didn’t feel ready” and thought “the task was not for her”.
Rita Ora’s manager Sarah Stennett (who has worked with Ellie Goulding, Jessie J and Conor Maynard) told HitQuarters that she convinced Rita Ora that competing in the Eurovision Song Contest would be detrimental to her success as a solo artist, rather than beneficial.
Soon after, Rita Ora’s manager contacted American record label Roc Nation and introduced her to them. She was one of Roc Nation’s first artists to sign, signing a record and publishing deal in December 2008.
She appeared in Jay-Z’s music video “Young Forever” (2009). After signing, she recorded an album and planned to release it, but the company discouraged her from doing so, so she began writing other songs for her first album.
Rita Ora posted covers and videos for her debut album on YouTube throughout 2011. The videos piqued the interest of DJ Fresh, who was looking for a female singer for his song “Hot Right Now.”
Rita Ora featured on the song, which was released on 12 February 2012 and peaked at number one on the UK Singles Chart. She also opened for Drake on his Club Paradise Tour in the UK in February 2012.
On 6 May 2012, “RIP” (featuring Tinie Tempah) was released as the first UK single from her debut album. Produced by Chase & Status, the song peaked at number one on the UK Singles Chart, becoming her first solo UK number one single.
How We Do (Party) was released as a single on 12 August and reached number one in the UK and Ireland. It was Rita Ora’s second number one single in the UK as a solo artist and her third number one single of 2012.
